What's my name?
This article was supposed to be a simple introduction to our company’s culture, but in the meantime, a documentary about sushi changed my life.
How is a Japanese 3-star Michelin chef related to marketing, e-commerce, and success?
Let’s see…
Jiro is one of the best sushi chefs in the world, holding a Guinness World Record for being the oldest chef of a three-Michelin restaurant.
His life vision was very clear:
“Once you decide on your occupation… you must immerse yourself in your work. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That’s the secret of success…”
Jiro is now 97 years old and has spent his whole life doing the same thing over and over, improving bit by bit.
Even though it seems he has a pretty boring life, the act of repeating the same task for years has brought him today’s success.
Yes, I know, it’s obvious. Staying focused and consistent in mastering your skill set will allow you to achieve incredible results.
But there was also something else…
Apart from his mission to improve his craft every day, Jiro also chose to work with suppliers who were as selective as he was.
He got tuna from a particular tuna supplier.
He got rice from the best rice dealer.
He got shrimp only from a certain shrimp seller.
You get the point.
Multi-tasking and micromanagement are the myths of our age.
Jiro’s happiness and fulfilment were achieved when he made the choice to focus solely on one aspect of his business, freeing himself from any other distractions.
Multi-tasking and micromanagement are the myths of our age.
Success indeed comes when we dedicate a big part of our lives to our skillset. But we couldn’t achieve so much without building a great team of people around us who share the same values when it comes to performance, drive, and focus.
Why did I get so fascinated with this story?
Because that’s our philosophy at AG Media Space. We are a team of partners, each dedicated to their own unique expertise and united by the same shared values – integrity, ambition, and ownership. Plus, the business fiasco that brought us together.
The day I met my partners, I was in a terrible place – managing an e-commerce store and trying to pay off the debt to Google from a disastrous collaboration with a supposed top-notch national advertising agency. I had come to see paid advertising as a colossal scam.
Long story short, and many prayers later, we took a leap of faith and let them manage our ad accounts. We had a hard time trusting them. They were these low-key experts who were passionate about technology and didn’t make any big promises. However, this level of transparency won us over. Overpromising individuals had already disappointed us.
It was funny (and reassuring) to see that our turnover had doubled a year later.
I no longer work in e-commerce, but we never stopped working together.
Today, we serve driven individuals just like Jiro, who also run their businesses with passion and determination.
Who you choose to work with will determine your business’s success.
